Archaeological Research on Cultural Evolution – where we stand and where we should go
by Andreas Maier,
University of Cologne
Despite the fact that the evolution of culture accompanies prehistoric research since its inception,
the subject has received rather little attention over the last decades and even less effort for advances
in method and theory. As a result, prehistoric archaeology today is equipped with analytical
categories which are mostly unsuited for the task. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of the state
of affairs, present some current research on the topic and give an outline of what I think is needed to
conduct meaningful archaeological research on cultural evolution in the future.
